there’s  instant  regret  as  soon  as  he  realizes  the  impact  his  yelling  has,  once  loud  &  chaotic  room  now  filled  with  silence  as  his  posture  falls  &  exterior  softens.   she’s  small,  soft    —   unlike  mary  jane.   he  doesn’t  have  to  even  think  about  it  to  know  why.  digits  curl  into  brown  strands,  gaze  averting  as  he  exhales  &  quietly  steps  back  /  any  anger  has  melted  away,  shifting  into  an  overwhelming  guilt.     ❛   mary  jane,   i     —-              a  pause,   deep  breath   ;   wordless,   he  tries  to  muster  up  something.      ❛     it’s  …   i’m  sorry,   i  didn’t  mean  to  upset  you  –

she  shakes  her  head  vigorously,  arms  tightening  around  herself  as  if  they  were  all  that  holds  her  together.  both  their  train  of  thoughts  return  to  a  quiet  night  in  queens,  disturbed  by  the  sound  of  glass  shattering  and  incoherent  shouting.  one  glance  is  all  it  takes  to  know  what  he’s  thinking.  already  ridden  with  such  unwarranted  self-blame,  she’d  hate  to  be  the  cause  behind  any  more.  she’s  messed  up,  but  not  because  of  him.   ❛    you  didn’t  ———– ‘m  okay,   ❜   she  huffs,  wiping  her  eyes  with  the  sleeve  of  her  jacket.    ❛    i’m  okay,   ❜   she  repeats,  voice  steadier  than  just  a  moment  ago.
